Okay I admit a personal interest. The author is a close relative. But, of his many books, this is the best by a long chalk. I do not read Private Eye – which he co founded and still writes for – any more and I do not agree with him on everything – he has some pretty deluded views on the problems facing the only democracy in the Middle East – his solutions ARE the problems. But on global warming we are at one. It is a con – something I was discussing only yesterday with the head of Greenpeace UK who is a member of the same management group as me. Needless to say the Greenpeace chap is singing from a different hymn sheet.


The political scandal of the decade broke this weekend. It is a global scandal. For the past half decade your leaders have told you lies in order to steal billions, perhaps trillions of pounds, dollars, euros and yen from hard working taxpayers in the bogus claim that they were saving the planet. Now hackers have unearthed a mass of emails and data from one of the leading "climate change" centres around the world (the UEA) which shows what a great con this is.


For people like my friend from Greenpeace the scandal at the UEA was the criminal hacking of computers. He dismissed the emails has raising one or two minor issues. He is in denial. The emails show that global warming is a con. If you want the smoking gun go here.


But some of us did not need hackers to show what an enormous ruse Global warming is. Booker has been pointing g out inconvenient truths (the world getting colder, ice caps expanding, etc, etc) for several years in his column in the Sunday Telegraph.


If you have relied on almost any other media source or on Government propaganda for the past few years you might have actually thought that the ice was melting or that this decade was warmer than the last. There is a huge global warming industry. Lavish conferences for media experts – all of whose sources – are Government funded or from pressure groups such as Greenpeace and Friends of the Earth who are very closely linked into the political elite. Government loves Global Warming as it has been a wonderful excuse to levy taxes. Who can argue with paying "a bit more" to save the planet? Perhaps mindful of all those lovely press junkets the deadwood press is still largely ignoring this scandal. As Upton Sinclair once said: "It is difficult to get a man to understand something when his job depends on not understanding it."

The price we skeptics have paid in recent years has been abuse and more abuse. The Archbishop of Canterbury (a man who should focus on trying to save his failing organisation rather than macroeconomics or science) describes climate change sceptics as akin to paedophiles because we threaten the future of our children. He was not the worst abuser although probably the silliest. Writing in the Guardian, a Mr James Randerson noted "Journalist Christopher Booker is piling on the pressure to remain the nations foremost and most ill-informed climate change sceptic." This is praise indeed.


Booker's tome lays out in well written detail why the hard evidence is that the world is not heating up; why – in – fact – over the past decade it has cooled and then shows how the politicians manipulated data, suppressed counter-data and persuaded us of the big lie. It shows clearly how counter views were suppressed and seeks to show the powerful forces behind the "global warming industry." Booker is an expert on political/media class led scares – how they start, are promoted, become icons of faith and how thee skeptics are rubbished. His last book – Scared to Death – covered not only Global Warming but also BSE, the Y2K scare and other matters. Do you remember how the Government assured us that hundreds of thousands of us would die from BSE because the scientists said so and used that as an excuse to massacre hundreds of thousands of animals? Or all the cash which was pissed away combating Y2K because the scientists said so. Does it sound at all familiar? Our leaders have to find a new way to steal our money and enact civil liberties suppressing laws. Politicians (of all parties) just love scares.


The real catastrophe of global warming is the price (in hard cash as well as in liberties lost) that we have paid and will continue to pay to combat this false threat – until our leaders finally move on to find another scare (global cooling perhaps?). Booker lists the real cost in painful detail. Read it and weep.
